Hashtags On Mastodon, hashtags aren’t #cliche. Since anyone can follow a hashtag to see posts even from people they don’t follow, tagging your posts is one of the better ways to get them discovered by people who share your interests. It’s also a great way to group your own posts by adding featured hashtags to your profile.

Content Warnings (CW)

Mastodon has the option to add a Content Warning to your posts. When a Content Warning is included, the post’s content will be collapsed by default and only the warning will be shown. Users must tap “Show More” to see the content of the post. This can be used to add a summary or subject for your post, collapse long posts, or otherwise provide context or setup for the body of the post.

Mastodon users have developed a culture of using CWs liberally, not only for NSFW content as you might expect but also as a way to provide an additional layer of consent when discussing topics that are sensitive, controversial, outside the norm for your posts, or even just plain boring. For example, you might not typically complain about your job or comment on recent events in your feed, but you could chose to do so behind a CW.

This gives your followers and anyone seeing your post in a public timeline the chance to decide if they want to read or scroll past it. Everyone deserves to control what they see in their feed and get out of social media what they want, CWs give just that little bit of control back.
