Using Mastodon Apps

← Back

Since Mastodon is an open source platform, anyone can create their own Mastodon apps free of worry that they’ll be shut down or blocked. Mastodon doesn’t sell ads, track your activity to sell you ads, or maintain centralized control of who can/can’t access an instance… they literally can’t. That’s the beauty of decentralization. 🧘

Twitter, by comparison, recently disabled access for third-party apps without warning or notification to sell more subscriptions and ads. And Facebook & Instagram have never allowed third-party apps to be developed for the same reasons.

Ice Cubes

Ivory

From the makers of Tweetbot (RIP) this this brand new app is already beloved by many. Delightful, beautiful, and customizable. (not free, however!)

Mastodon (Official)

The Official Mastodon app is also a good way to go. Available for iOS and Android, it’s a nice on-ramp experience for new users (but won’t give you any unofficial features like third-party apps often do)

Mastodon has a helpful list of third-party apps available on their website:
